๐ We have shared this app before but to reiterate it for those who may of missed it or just forgotten.
.
๐ ‘What 3 words’. The most important aspect of getting help to you should an emergency situation arise is - ‘Your location!’ Here is what it’s all about.
-
๐ We take safety seriously, this app is one that’s recommended by the emergency services and is being used in incidences all over the world to assist Officers/Paramedics/Firefighters/Coast guard in locating those who need their help. One of the most important things the 999 Emergency Operator needs from their callers is their location - believe it or not so many people have no idea where they are - this is a free app that enables Police, Fire and Ambulance to locate you within 3metres - Download it - With the roads becoming more dangerous we need to take personal safety seriously.
-
๐ If people do not have the app, the emergency services can send a text message containing a web link to their phones. But that requires a signal (85% of the country is said to have a 4G connection). The app does not need a phone signal to tell someone their three-word location. For example there was a group up a mountain and one got injured,” They haven’t got any signal to call for help, but they can still find out their three word location. Someone then from the group can take that down and tell the emergency services, who then know exactly where to go to find the injured person..
.
๐ The Emergency Services are urging people to download the free app.
.
Enjoy your sport just be careful. Take your phone when you go it alone. Please share โค๏ธ

Dennis Walmsley and Jessica Snow headed North to take part in ‘ Marathon Eryri’
This marathon is known as one of Wales’ most challenging sporting events, and one of the UK’s greatest marathons, will welcome some 2,800 runners to Llanberis on Saturday the 26th of October.
This classic race features some of the most testing terrain imaginable for a road marathon, starting on the outskirts of Llanberis as they ascend and descend through the scenery of Bwlch Llanberis and Nant Gwynant, and the arduous wall-like climb to Bwlch y groes, before the final descent into the village.
Walmsley is very familiar with the course having won the event multiple times in the past, this was Snows first outing.
Both members put in a fantastic performance, Walmsley crossing the line in 03:56.06, Walmsley quoted at the end ‘ After a steady start, then pick up at 16 miles the course truly bit me, having hip problems I literally crawled from 20 miles to the finish. This was my 9th time doing this epic marathon and it never disappoints maybe just my performance though!
Snow not far behind crossed the line in 04:17.00 an amazing achievement considering she has been injured recently she didn’t let this stop her putting in 110%

๐ A fantastic event with a great club turnout, this was the second time the club had taken part in this event, last year we fielded 5 teams…. who knows what 2025 will bring!
A recent post from member Laura…..
‘Just sharing a little win with everyone’
๐ฅถ Last September seasoned open water swimmer Jon Francis invited adult members to join him in cold water swimming through the winter at Lake 32.
๐ฅถSeveral of us took the opportunity to step outside our comfort zones and by Christmas, a few of us had got the bug and set a goal of completing an open water swim at least once every month for a full year.
๐ฅถWell, a year on and we smashed our goal by going at least once, often much more, each month and not only have we come to an agreement with the fish to give us some space, we’ve learned about sighting, attended a few events and bang on about open water swimming to anyone who’ll listen. In skins too - we’ve not put a wetsuit on in any temperatures!
It’s certainly a huge step outside of my own comfort zone and I really appreciate all that came for moral support and fun. And Jon and Dawn, especially for sharing the whole journey.
Laura
PS - it was 18C today (starting to cool down). Now is the best time to start acclimatising for the winter chill for any members wanting to give it a try ๐ฅถ
Fantastic well done to all those involved ๐

๐ ๐โ๏ธ Miriam Parish Channel swim ๐โ๏ธ ๐
Back in July Miriam swam the English Channel in 12hrs 5mins as an all female relay team ๐ฅณ
Miriam’s account -
๐ I did this event with the channel swimming Association who have this year just banned GPS watches and trackers so I don’t have a record of exactly how far I swam, but I have the overall track of the boat that shows the route that we took.
I๐ t’s 21 miles as the crow flies, but you usually swim much more than that due to the tides, I swam two sections of the route, one hour total times two. I was in a team of five, all ladies, total swim time was 12 hours and five minutes. I did my sections swimming as crawl
๐ We came 2nd out of the 6 channel swim crossings that day, and first relay team to make it, sadly a few didn’t make it, and we were the first relay team to land in France. I actually swam the channel last year too as a team of four, and we made it in 14 hours 40 minutes, so we beat the time I did last year by almost 3 hrs.
๐ Fantastic conditions, started at 04:15 swimming into the sunrise, got choppy as we hit mid channel and lots of swell with jellyfish and tankers, finishing the last slog to get to France landing on the rocks at Cape Griz Nez in time for croissants ๐ฅ ๐ฌ๐งโก๏ธ๐ซ๐ท
What’s next we ask!!….
It was so much fun. I’m just having a wee swimming break now, but the next event is swimming the length of Lake Geneva in September, which is twice the length of the channel ๐ฎ๐จ but I’m in a strong relay team for that so hopefully we will make it, I’ll let you know!
๐Massive achievement and a very very well done ๐

Part 2 UK Triathlon write up by Bart Finley -
๐ 14 NCTR members descended on Ellesmere last Saturday for the UK Ultimate Triathlon. Inspired by Tom Williams doing the solo full-distance event many club members decided to challenge themselves to relays at the same time on the Sunday.
๐First out on the day, at 6.30 were Tom and the full-distance relay team consisting of Amy, Mike and Elly.
Full-distance triathlons are an incredible beast and any completion is an incredible feat. Tom put in an impressive performance of 12hrs 12mins seeing him finish 3rd in his age-group and 12th overall. A superb performance that was a privilege to witness for all. He felt the race didn’t go as he had hoped for, making the result and time even more impressive.
๐The relay team absolutely monstered the whole thing going on to win the team relay event! Amy struggled with faulty goggles the whole way round the swim, finished as 1st female & 2nd overall in 61mins. Mike obliterated the bike course in 5hrs 40mins, 5th overall. Elly (competing in her first ever marathon!) was incredible. So composed throughout to finish in 4hrs 14mins, 1st female and 9th overall.
The other relay teams competed in the middle-distance event.
๐Team Kerry was lead out impressively by Jon on the swim with 35mins, Kerry smashing the bike in 3hrs 14mins and Bart running in 1hr 44mins. An overall time of 5hrs 36mins for a super 6th place finish.
๐Team Laura had Simon swim 37mins, Neil clocking 3hrs 4mins on the bike and Laura running 2hrs 2mins. The overall time was 5hrs 47mins for 7th place. Brilliant!
๐Team Herd Mentality were excellently lead out by Giles on the swim in 40mins, followed by Pauline pulling an excellent 3hrs 16mins bike leg to be topped of with Kate (running her first half marathon in over 14years) in 2hrs 18mins. According to the results they came 8th!
Overall, this was simply an incredible weekend. Aside from the fact that everyone came and produced incredible individual and team results, the club togetherness was an utter joy. We were definitely the strongest club on display and we had a blast doing it.
Everyone should be incredibly proud. We will return next year!

๐ฌ๐งPress Report…….Helen Holden won the NCTR TCS London Marathon place for this year, this was her first marathon, here is her story…….
๐ฌ๐ง What an epic adventure! London you’ve been great
I’m not going to lie, the prospect was daunting, but it was absolutely the right decision to say yes when I won the place at the Christmas party. My running tribe have been amazing support.
๐ฌ๐ง I only got to 18 miles in training due to falling down the stairs about 6 weeks out, having just run my fastest half marathon time, feeling great, the weekend before. I lost two full weeks of training and went from a 10.5 mile long run to 18 miles as my last long run. So everything after that was uncharted territory.
The London crowds are totally amazing. I think it’s a tiny insight to how pop stars must feel on stage - the adrenaline rush of so many people shouting your name, encouragement is so powerful. I totally smashed that with a finish time of 5:22. Including 8 minutes queuing for/using a loo at mile 7!
๐ฌ๐ง It took a village to get me to the start line in such a good condition physically and mentally. It’s been a really challenging and life changing 8 months & my various tribes, family have totally had my back for this & other aspects of my life.
A massive thanks goes to Izzy, Helen, Nic and Rachel each of them giving up their time to help me and the support they offered has been unforgettable.
๐ฌ๐ง I did this event to raise funds for Parkinson’s UK in memory of my Dad. I have raised over £2k raised! Dad would have been so proud. I’m making sure I have fun Dad and saying yes to the opportunities that come my way!
โค๏ธ And lastly to my children Gracie & Jacob. Thank you for being the most supportive children. I hope I have shown you that anything is possible if you put the effort in!
I feel so loved and supported by so many people.
I’m one lucky girl!
The ballot is open for 2025 – right!!! ๐คฃ๐คฃ๐

The Juniors are back to training from 23rd March more on this later in the week.
๐โ๏ธ Led by our Open Water Swimming Coach, Jon Francis, NCTR members braved both the cold and the night to join other swimmers and dippers at Lake 32’s Snow Moon event on Saturday.
๐โ๏ธ Participants were treated to a stunning sunset over glassy still water as they eagerly awaited darkness before donning headtorches and entering the lake.
๐โ๏ธStarting in October, this small group of members have consistently attended the lake to swim, without wetsuits, and share a hot chocolate around the campfire while warming up and basking in the post-swim buzz. Saturday was no different, with music and plenty of other swimmers to share the experience with.
๐โ๏ธJon has generously shared his knowledge and gentle encouragement to support our members, some complete open water novices, to step outside their comfort zones and benefit from the challenge of the cold water experience. All while training for his own cold water event in Estonia at the Winter Swimming World Championship in March. Cotswold Water Park will feel tropical in comparison!
๐โ๏ธWith the very coldest months behind us, our cold swimmers are well on their way to achieving their goal of swimming in each month of the year and in fact have been almost every weekend since October.
๐โ๏ธThe group are incredibly grateful to Jon for his support and, alongside the whole of NCTR wish him all the very best in Estonia!

A Christmas message.....
-
Christmas and the holiday season can bring a bag of mixed emotions, for some it is a time of celebrations, presents, fun and laughter. To others it can be a tough time, a time when people can feel very alone. A time to remember that special person that sadly isn’t at the table this year โค๏ธ.
-
A time to give thanks - We would like to give thanks to our Emergency Services personal, both civilian and operational including RNLI. December 25 is just another day for them and they will have officers/staff on duty as they do 365 days of the year, 24 hours a day.
-
Our thoughts also turn to our Armed Forces, where there will be somewhere in the region of 4,500 members of the British Armed Forces personal spending Christmas away from loved ones this year as they are deployed on operations around the world.
-
Thank you to you all and stay safe.
-
What ever your situation and where ever you are in the world we are wishing you all a Very Merry Christmas and a healthy Happy New Year.

A 250KM SELF-SUFFICIENT ULTRA MARATHON THROUGH THE NAMIB DESERT
๐๏ธ This is the Namib Desert, Namibia. It’s one of the oldest and most hostile deserts in the world.
๐๏ธ Desert running is a real challenge, with sweltering heat of over 50 degrees during the day, temperatures drop to freezing at night. As you survive the heat and the dust, you will be surrounded on all sides by sand dunes and baking scrubland.
๐๏ธ The Spitksoppe Mountains loom as you disappear as a dot into the shimmering heat haze on the horizon.
๐๏ธ Participants race 250km in 5 stages and are responsible for carrying their own equipment and what they need to survive, this race is not only physical but an extreme mental challenge.

๐งฑ ‘Runners Wall’ ‘Hitting the wall’ What is it? Why do we do it? What does this phrase mean to you? We asked our members and the running community for feedback, here is what they said. Remember everyone is different ultimately it’s finding out what works for you.
-
๐
‘Hitting the wall means you lack training, you took on something big that you can’t swallow, planning and enough training is the key’.
-
๐
‘Hitting the wall could be a result of bad pacing on race day, going off too fast or failing to keep food in your properly, maybe it was hotter than you had trained for, or you were feeling unwell’.
-
๐
‘Back in the 70s and 80s before Electrolytes and gels Marathon runners used to hit the wall after 20m when glycogen stores ran out, there should be no excuses about hitting the wall these days, with so many aid stations and products to keep a running going’.
-
๐
‘I hit the wall at London Marathon after running 20-21 miles. I became disorientated and just wasn’t with it, its just when you run out of energy and you have nothing left to give, every few steps you take becomes a massive struggle including walking, I don’t want to ever feel like that again’.
-
๐
‘It’s about adequate training and nutrition, we all have bad patches but if we are practised and prepared we can run through them, I think a lot of people think they have hit a wall due to physical factors when mostly it is a mental barrier they have come up against’.
-
๐
I’ve only done two marathons, the first was awful as I hit the wall at mile 23/24 (flat & fast) and the second I loved and had energy for a sprint finish (hilly trail). I always advise drink early on, train with gels or jelly babies and focus on pacing - particularly early on in the race. I had been running for a few years, had trained well for my first but I didn’t know the importance of hydration & fuel.
-
๐
I’ve never hit the wall on any long run and I think it is because I have always kept myself fed during every event.

๐ง New to NCTR Nippy Dippers ๐ง
Led by swim coach Jon Francis, a handful of members have been attending Lake 32 on a regular basis to gradually acclimatise to cold water.
The focus has been to gradually learn how to prepare both body and mind to the cold temperatures safely. Including a short swim before warming back up on the shore.
The group have been treated to some beautiful mornings at the lake including moody mist on the water, bright sunshine and even an up close encounter with the resident cygnets.
Jon leads the attendees into the water and encourages them to splash the cool water over their arms, hands and face, gradually getting further submerged until swimmers are neck deep. This requires significant control over the instinct to hyperventilate and lift yourself out of the cold water.
Through slow, controlled breathing the cold shock subsides after a minute or two.
๐ง Swimming comes next for those who want to. There are options depending on ability and confidence to swim 50m, 100m, 200m up to a 750m loop for the more experienced cold water swimmers.
Experts say the benefits of cold water dipping include:
๐ง Decrease inflammation
๐ง Offer a huge rush of endorphins,
๐ง Spike dopamine
๐ง Improve sleep and moo
๐ง Reduce stress
๐ง Help remedy aches and pains
๐ง Boost injury recovery
๐ง Reduce swelling
๐ง Potentially increase testosterone
๐ง Promote lymphatic drainage
๐ง Regulate hormones
๐ง Accelerate metabolism
Safety is key. Our members swim in a supervised area, wear tow floats, stay together, get out before feeling too cold, dress warmly afterwards and grab a hot drink while they catch up after the swim.
Thank you to @jonfrancis45 who has been orgs@using these sessions
Thank you to @0lauraflora0 for writing this post ๐

๐More out later in the week ๐
.
Last week our members headed out for our Thursday social run, it was dark, it was cold and it was wet, so why did they do it?
๐ซถ Making new friends or catching up with old ones on foot have helped many a runner so we thought we’d look at some of the benefits……
๐ Accountability - Have you ever set your alarm for 5am with the best intentions of getting in your run before work and then snooze right through it to wake up with runner’s guilt? We’ve all been there. When we set a meet up with people to run we are much more likely to show up and get in the miles. Accountability is a great force of action when it comes to getting in your runs, and it makes for a much more pleasurable experience.
๐ Motivation - esearch has shown that when we run with others, we can run farther and faster more easily. One reason is because we are motivated by the social connection. Fitness is contagious and when we run socially, we gain an instant source of motivation to keep us running through life.
๐ Learn and Grow - Whether it’s a new recipe or sharing a running tip, we can all learn from others that have run before us. Most running groups are led by coaches or leaders that are seasoned runners who can answer your questions or give advice along the way. Sometimes it’s the smallest of tips that propel you the farthest towards improvement.
๐ Friends - Some of the closest of friends are found through hobbies that we do, there is always that common ground. We share stories of our week, the good, the bad and the stressful. We’ve run through celebrations, weddings, and funerals. It’s amazing the bond that builds when we move with like-minded people. We’re all on the same path moving forward through the high’s and low’s of life. Social running builds friendships that last a lifetime.
๐โ๏ธ We just love running ๐โ๏ธ

For example there was a group up a mountain and one got injured," They haven't got any signal to call for help, but they can still find out their three word location. Someone then from the group can take that down and tell the emergency services, who then know exactly where to go to find the injured person..
.
๐ The Emergency Services are urging people to download the free app.
.
Enjoy your sport just be careful. Take your phone when you go it alone. Please share โค๏ธ

๐ฅLPS Triathlon Part 2 ‘ The Juniors’
We manage to catch up with the winning NCTR team for a chat -
๐ Sean- I am happy with my overall performance, I went out too easy on the swim & too hard on the bike resulting in a slower run leg. Both of my transitions went smoothly especially T2. Noah had the fastest leg out of al of us at a total of 29:08 with me and Will practically perfectly even at one second either side of 31:04. I am proud of our team performance. I look forward to similar events in the future “
๐ Noah - Jonathon Cook took the first leg, offering to take the mass start in the swim. Jonathon set the team up with a great first leg on all three elements and we were grateful for this strong head start on the adult teams. Sean smashed it out the park, he’s such a well-rounded athlete he passed the tag over to Will on leg three. Will is the most experienced open water swimmer with a super running dive from the pontoon, followed that up with a superb effort in all disciplines.
Then me - We knew it was really close with one of the adult teams, including our coach & my dad on L3 of that team. We were a decent margin behind them. My transitions were neat, we practise these a lot in training. I set out knowing I’d do my absolute best, the bike is my favourite discipline. This was my first youth event, and, individually.
๐ Will - It was an amazing experience, I really enjoyed the day. It was my 1st team Tri. I am really pleased with our final performance and times. Our goal was to beat the adults and we DID!
๐ Jonathan - We are all U17 and were the only junior team taking part. I’m very proud of our overall position & individual times. We all put in 100% effort. This was my 1st race in 4 years, next up London 10km!
๐ A special mention also to Lucy Hyland. Lucy has been in the juniors for many years, now 17 she was taking part in one of the NCTR Adult teams.
Kate from her team said - “Lucy was amazing, she is a phenomenal swimmer and athlete. Not only did she hold her own nerve, she was utterly reassuring to the rest of us. Lucy took every element in her stride, she was a perfect team member.
Well done everyone!

‘ NCTR Juniors put the adults through their paces’
It was an exciting weekend for the club as we fielded 4 teams at the popular LPS Triathlon Relay held at Lake 62.
๐ฅEach team consists of 4 participants with each member completing a 300m lake swim, 8km bike and a 1.5km run.
The teams were
๐ข Team 1 ( The Dream Team)
Jonathan Cook, Sean Hyland, Will Cartlidge, Noah Williams.
๐ก Team 2)
Andy King, Frankie Copley, Tom Williams, Cat Roche
Combined Time: 02:01.55
๐ข Team 3)
Simon Finley, Jon Francis, Will Banks, Chris Bull
Combined Time 02:10.22
๐ก Team 4)
Giles Hyland, Lucy Hyland, Kate Robertson, Elly Finley
Combined Time: 02:26.43
๐ฅ This was the 1st time the juniors have gone up against their Coaches.
๐ฅ All 4 Junior members have been with the club for a good few years now and putting into practise their training never meant so much to them.
The swim was an open water lake swim at Lake 62, followed by the cycle and run. The weather was extremely hot last weekend but this did not deter the competitor. The 2 top teams were very close but the juniors manage to pip the adults with a combined time of 02:01.18, with the next NCTR team coming in not long after.
Afterwards the Junior Dream Team quoted ‘ Sean smashed it and ran a fantastic leg, Will is the most experience open water swimmer and dived off the pontoon when it was his turn. It was Jonathans first event in 4 years, he was strong on every discipline. Noah had the fastest leg out of us all. Together we felt unstoppable. We are all really happy with our performance as individuals and as a team. Beating our coaches only made the day better, we couldn’t of done it without all their experience and guidance over the years’
We manage to catch up with the juniors for individual race reports more on this tomorrow ๐

NCTR wereout in force at the Southam Triathlon last week, it was fantastic to see adults and juniors all taking part.
๐ข Terry Cassidy finished 25th overall and 4 in his AG. ๐ก Kerry Taylor took part in the St Neots standard Tri. Taylor finished in a time of 2:46:44 16th age 40-49.
๐ข Claire Harrison & Ann Hillary ran the local popular event ‘Chedworth trail 10miles’ not to disappoint her on her last run as Miss Harrison the duo made it an adventure, after assisting in helping another runner who had been stung by several angry hornets they manage to catch up with the tail runner and finish the race.

Once again the Tenby town section of the run was packed with fans - the hill out was always tough and the heat was taking its toll on a lot of people! I managed to pick a fair few off and worked my way round - the gap between aid stations began to bite around lap 3 but seeing my support crew at the bottom of town and the girls running up the hill with me was a massive boost and much needed! I hit the wall at the start of lap 4 - the heat had really turned up a notch but I wanted to keep pushing so after a moment under a hose from a helpful local I forged on!
Luckily I got to the red carpet on my own - rang the bell like it was the last time it was ever going to be rung! Luckily in wales the timing finishes at the start of the red carpet so I was able to enjoy the run in more high fives and smiles and finally Craig Voisey (even said my last name correctly) you are an Ironman!!!
What a day it was! I left it all out there……. Can’t wait to go again!
There are so many thank yous the list would be longer than this blurb! But to all those I train with at the club, to Caroline and my girls a special thank you! For Tom - I wasn’t S#*T
Well done Craig from all at NCTR.
Out later in the week - NCTR juniors beat the adults in the Relay ๐คฉ
.
Last week Craig Voisey tackled Ironman Wales, here is his journey in his words.
๐ฅ My Ironman journey started over a year ago when, after staggering round the Stratford marathon I decided I would and could never do an Ironman - then I was talked into Ironman 70.3 in Swansea and my mind was drastically changed- Ironman wales was to be my first full distance!
๐ฅ And thank god it was! Accompanied by the best support crew around - Caroline, indie and tiggy along with an army for old rugby mate supporting and racing we travelled down to beautify Tenby on Friday in the sun, with registration done and digs sorted we headed to the beach. Much the same on Saturday after racking really soaking up the atmosphere like no other.
Then the big day - Sunday.
๐ฅ The swim start was insane, having to push through fans to get to the infamous zigzags, I would estimate 2-3000 people on then cliffs above north beach. It started to get real when the Welsh anthem was belted out but all - a very spine tingling moment! even for the non Welsh!!! Then AC/DC started blasting, fireworks were banging and we were off!!
๐ฅ Two laps off north beach for the swim, we had good tides and a flat sea and I was bang on the time I was hoping for in the swim! I felt relaxed and confident through and only got lost once……
๐ฅ Out of the swim for the 1.1km uphill run to T1 - again the crowd support was amazing - the whole way back was lined at least 3 deep! High fives galore!!
The bike is notorious for being a tough course and it is - but I hit it hard and ate up the ‘flat’ section as fast as I could. Then when I got to the ‘holly’ section I managed to keep pace for the two laps - heart break hill is a thing of legend - much like a climb on the tour crowds parting in front of you going mad - as the beer flowed the crowed got even more excited - luckily my distinctive tri suit got a lot of love on that hill. I finish the bike again bang on where I wanted to be!
๐ฅ T2 was an easier affaire - quick ditch and a moment of composure than off on the run.
Part 2 out tomorrow! ๐๐๐

๐๏ธ Press Report ๐๏ธ
As we approach the end of the summer our members were still out racing hard, both on home soil and abroad.
๐ First up was Sophi Mason from our juniors, who continues her hard work. Enduring tough conditions out in Jersey, Sophi tackled the Jersey Tri Club Ana Leaf Aquathon Series Race 3. In her first sea swim event she took on the 100m swim and a 1km run along the breakwater. The rain was torrential and even caused the timing box to stop working.
๐ Continuing a great race season were Frankie Copley and Craig Voisey. At a sellout Oxfordshire Tri Series Triathlon on Sunday 20th August. Both had an excellent race on the 1km swim, 48km bike, and 7km run course.
Frankie, who described this as her toughest race yet, came in 12th lady overall (1st lady AG / 13th overall AG).
Craig placed 10th overall age group (51st men’s).
Great results everyone! ๐๐ผ

Part 2 - My Ironman Journey by Dennis Walmsley…..
8 months ago I hadn’t ridden more than 60 miles since the early 80’s, furthest ever swam was 1.2 miles and had not swam for 3 years.
The swim scared me the most, an unknown. The bike I felt comfortable with, the run was dubious considering my difficulties since I got older.
Despite 2 weeks completely off through illness, my training was consistent!
RACE DAY
Lining up at the start amongst a thousand black bodies with orange bodies, I was pensive. Not sure if it was the culmination of 8 months training or the reality of what I was about to do. I just felt God’s presence & at that moment although I knew it wouldn’t be easy, I knew I was going to be alright! ‘ done it, now let the race begin!”
T1- A reasonable transition I got on bike, the chase was on! I literally overtook 100’s of bikers. I felt like I was flying The wind picked up, the side wind nearly took me out! I absolutely loved the bike and probably paid for my exuberance.
T2 - I came out I was fumbling around for my inhaler, belt upside down. A quick belt change and posing for photos I raised my arms in triumph of getting this far, but in my mind I was thinking how on earth was I going to do a marathon on these legs! I wasn’t going to waist 12 hours of punishment to pull out now without some sort of reward, I was going to grin and bare it till the bitter end. Well, there wasn’t much grinning I can assure you! In fact I had no external reaction to the cheers I got but believe me, every shout and cheer was heard and converted into motivation fuel!
I swear the course got longer! You collect a different colour wrist band for every lap done. The last 3 miles were slightly downhill so I had built up a little extra speed and was imagining my moment of glory and how I was going to parade myself on the red carpet.
Running strong into the finish I was mindful not to outsprint the person in front and hold back and take the stage. My glory was slightly taken away by the commentator still wittering on about Adam Collard the “Love Island” star.
The interviewer then came up to to me and said those immortal words…
“DENNIS WALMSLEY YOU ARE AN IRONMAN!”
.
๐โ๏ธ ๐ด๐โ๏ธ Ironman Bolton 2023 ๐โ๏ธ๐ด๐โ๏ธ
Last weekend members Dennis Walmsley & Bart Finley completed their first full distance triathlon Ironman Bolton.
The borough has been home to IRONMAN since 2009 and has since added the world's largest IRONKIDS event and the popular Night Run. Sadly this was the last year the full distance will be held in Bolton, instead the new programme will now see IRONMAN UK become IRONMAN 70.3 Bolton, meaning the race will still follow the swim-bike-run format but will be half the distance across all disciplines.
For those that aren’t familiar a full distance triathlon consists of 2.4m, 112 miles on the bike topped off with a marathon 26.2! It’s certainly not easy!
Here are their own reports on the event
โญ๏ธ I raced Ironman UK in Bolton and it was a belter! It was my first Ironman/ full distance triathlon.
โญ๏ธ This was all about finishing for me…which I did!
โญ๏ธ Time- 13:24:54

262/840 overall
โญ๏ธ The course was no joke but my fantastic supporters got me through the day. Thank you to everyone who helped me get there and for all the good vibes before and after. I couldn’t have done it without you. โค๏ธ

โ
Craig finished in 2hr 33.39 - 97 overall and 13th in age group!

He finished 44th overall (39th male) with times of 1hr 23 for the swim, 7hr 3 for the bike and 3hr 30 for the run! Great weekend in Tenby!

Dear competitors
It is with great regret we have cancelled our first edition of the Junior Triathlon, due to be held at The Cotswold School on the 8th July 2023.
Although we have had plenty of interest and entries, sadly, we did not gain our minimum number of competitors to make the event financially viable this year.
North Cotswold Tri and Run club is a voluntary led organisation and the club committee worked very hard to get this event ready to go in a few weeks time.
Everything was in place to run a super event and we definitely will be exploring options to try again in the future.
Thank you to everyone who has supported us so far.
Those who have entered will be contacted shortly to arrange a full refund of their place(s).
Thank you again and we hope to run this event again in the future.
The Junior Tri Club Committee.

NCTR Hill 100 Relay write up courtesy of Coach Den Team A, Team B to come!
Dennis Walmsley set the team off to a good start. Walmsley kept with the lead group before dropping off into 3rd, finishing in second with a time of 1:08:18.
Dan Pebody burst off the mark & into a strong rhythm on what is the highest elevation leg 2, he soon overhauled the next runner to take the team into the lead right up until the last half mile Pebody’s time of 1:09:34 was a cracking time for such a tough leg.
Next to go was Chris Kryzwiec always
strong boosted his confidence in a very respectable 1:10:36 and in doing so took us into the lead once more, creating a huge 6 minute gap to the next team.
Craig Hamilton-smith was in fine fettle & at the top of his game as he took over on leg 4, he smashed it in 1:07:42 extending our lead even further.
Leg 5, Tom Renton-Rose went out fast, keen to do his team proud, a whopping 12 minutes of his last years leg. He gave it his absolute all handing over to John Hancock our fastest runner on the team who did not disappoint!
Smiling all the way he completely obliterated the course in 1:04:40 to hand over to our first of 3 lady runners.
Always strong Lucy Walmsley ploughed on with her run of 1:13:54 nailed it and was giving the team a great podium chance.
Next up was a nervous Pippa Marsden who soon settled in to what was a great run. Although needing a bit of directional guidance, her support for the team was invaluable and did herself proud in a strong 1:22:22 performance.
The penultimate leg was Frankie Copley she was like a coiled spring as she took off from the baton exchange, unbelievably there was just no let up, finished in a daze & almost broken but but not out in a time of 1:19:15 handing over to the our chairman, Tom Williams.
Williams running strong, every second counted as he forged on with the support from some that had finished their legs, completely focused on the task as he took the team home in 1:12:33 giving the team an overall sub 12hr run in 11:56:46.
Everyone’s efforts were rewarded with a podium 3rd Well done team, sterling performances and once again put North Cotswold Tri and Run firmly on the map.

Dear potential competitor,
As you may be aware we are holding our first ever triathlon event on 8/7/23 in the form of a junior team triathlon. Which promises to be a great event.
Currently, we do not have the numbers required to run this event. As such, we have made the decision that if we do not get sufficient entries by Friday 16th June we will have to cancel the event. This is not something that we want to do, nor will we take the decision to do so lightly.
If you are thinking of signing up please do not delay. Leaving entry until the last minute will be too late!
This event promises to be special. This is one of the first, if not the first, junior team triathlons to be held in the UK. It is a fantastic opportunity to create a truly inclusive triathlon event whilst making it more competitive than any individual event could hope to be. We really believe this type of event is vital to continued engagement of children with triathlon for life.
We are also offering fantastic value for money at £21 per entry. Most triathlons start at £35, so that is no small saving. Particularly if there are multiple competitors from one family.
Please sign-up and share this now. This event is not for profit. It is for children and to grow the sport of triathlon in the UK.
Be there at the start of something special.
Thank you,
Bart and the entire NCTR Junior Team Triathlon Committee

๐ฅ NCTR are holding their first event on July 8th, a Junior Team Triathlon
Our main objective of this event is to make it inclusive for all competitors no matter what standard.
๐ฅ Bart, the event committee chairman has quoted
‘My key focus was to provide a team event. This is because I feel strongly that often competition for junior athletes is somewhat broken. In children, slight age differences can have dramatic effects in athletic pursuits, as can growth rates and just the privilege of access to various sporting facilities.
Ultimately, it leads to some children becoming disillusioned by sport because they are not as celebrated and sometimes even not coached the same as others deemed to be more successful. By creating a team event you give those that maybe don’t ascend to the top of a standard race equal footing in the competition. By combining the times of your competitors in teams your slowest racer becomes as important and integral as your fastest.
This gives all a purpose, an incentive and a real competitive edge to race. Not to just make up numbers’

The 127th Boston Marathon starts tomorrow and all eyes will be on Eliud Kipchoge
Is he aiming for to beat the course record of 2:03:02, held by Kenyan Geoffrey Mutai since 2011???
He’s won and set course records in London (2:02:37, 2019), Berlin (2:01:09, 2022), and Tokyo (2:02:40, 2022).
Winning Boston would put Kipchoge at five out of six titles in the World Marathon Majors series, leaving only New York to be conquered.
We will certainly be following him
It starts 13:37 BST!! Eeek!!!!!

The NCTR Juniors were established in 2017 by now chairman Tom Williams & with the help of member Neil Teague it has gone from strength to strength.
2023 is an exciting year for the club we will be holding our first event, a Junior Team Tri on July 8th in Bourton on the water.
This is the brain child Bart Finley. He became a member of NCTR in 2019 and has gone onto became the Junior Membership Secretary for the club in 2020. As a local resident and having children in the junior section himself Bart wanted to ‘give something back’
Bart had previously completed triathlons but after becoming a member of the club it reignited his passion for the sport. Bart has subsequently gone onto gain his Level 1 Coaching Certificate with British Triathlon in 2021.
Bart has quoted ‘ I am passionate about junior triathlon, generally our junior athletes. Generally, the children I coach inspire me to be a better athlete myself.
As chairman of the committee for the triathlon my key focus was to provide a team event. This is because I feel strongly that often competition for junior athletes is somewhat broken. In children, slight age differences can have dramatic effects in athletic pursuits, as can growth rates and just the privilege of access to various sporting facilities.
Ultimately, it leads to some children becoming disillusioned by sport because they are not as celebrated, sometimes even not coached the same as others deemed to be more successful. By creating a team event you give those that maybe don’t ascend to the top of a standard race equal footing in the competition. By combining the times of your competitors in teams your slowest racer becomes as important and integral as your fastest. This gives all a purpose, an incentive.
As part of the ‘giving something back’ We recognise triathlon can be an expensive sport, a tri suit, a bike, trainers the cost all adds up. We want the event to be inclusive so with the help of the local primary and secondary school we will be offering a free chid place per year group & free 4 weeks membership leading up to the event for those who meet the eligibility criteria.
IMAGINE BELIEVE ACHIEVE.

It was fantastic to see so many of the club out to support one another in festive fancy dress and having fun!
๐ 2022 has been a brilliant year. As a club we have welcomed new members and watched as they have achieved their goals.
๐ Collectively as a club we have ran several thousands of miles, biked up and down hundreds and hundreds of hills and swam length after length, it's been an absolutely pleasure!

โฐ From a young age 'Time' becomes a huge part of our lives, on average a child is able to tell the time from 8yrs old.
-
We use time in every aspect of our daily lives, starting with the sound of the alarm clock in the mornings to the moment we set it again before we fall asleep.
-
Our lives have becomes a day of 'Time'.
-
1) Time to get up & get dressed.
2) Time for breakfast
3) Time to make a cup of tea.
4) Time for get kids to school
5) Time to go to work
6) Have I got enough time to do this/that today.
-
As soon as we walk out the door we have a 'head' full of time lines.
-
Our children become mini 'Time Travellers'.....
1) What time do I have to be home?
2) What time is dinner?
3) How long til we get there?
4) What time is bed??.
-
We also judge a lot on what we achieve by time. We all want to achieve a 'Good Time' What time did you do it in? What time are you going for? Are you happy with your time? What time did you want to do? This can quickly become a negative feeling, Does your time really truly reflect your effort? Just because we didn't get the fastest time doesn't mean your effort was any less than the winners.
-
Time is a funny thing, how many of us wish we could turn back time? Back to when we made 'that choice' that prob wasn't the best one but over 'time' we’ve learnt to deal with it. Do we wish we could of done better had we used our 'time' more efficiently? Or do we simply say we ran out of 'Time'.
-
How many of us are guilty of saying ‘No, I don’t have enough time for that’.
-
Which brings us to Christmas. A family 'Time', Time' to spend with loved ones, 'Time' to remember loved ones that aren’t with us, 'Time' for new goals, 'Time' for change, 'Time' to reflect, 'Time' for ourselves 'Time' to listen, 'Time' for hugs, 'Time' for fun, 'Time' for laughter 'Time' to talk, 'Time' to just be together.
-
We all have such busy lives but the best gift you can ever give someone is 'Your Time' โค๏ธ

๐ฌ๐งLondon Marathon Report ๐ฌ๐ง
The 2022 London Marathon was the 42nd running of the annual London Marathon on 2 October 2022. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the race was postponed from April until October to maximise the chances of a mass participation event.
Around 50,000 people took part in the street course around London while a further 50,000 are likely to be involved in the virtual course.
Every year has seen the race get bigger and bigger & this year was set to be no exception. Many runners raising thousands of pounds towards their chosen charities. Since it began over £1billion has been raised.
This year NCTR had 3 members out on the course, Mike Kelly who was raising money towards Worldwide Cancer Research, Jess Snow & Annie Hillary.
Mike has ran this course before but for Jess & Annie it was their first time experiencing the event and it didn’t disappoint.
All 3 members had different wave colours & start times. Mike was Green, Annie was blue & Jess was in Greenwich for the red wave.
๐ฌ๐งFirst off was Mike - “ I can't remember ever digging in so hard over the last 5 miles. 3hrs 10 mins, Personal Best at London by 17 minutes. I ran my heart out for every pound raised which, incredibly in just over a week, is getting close to £2000. I love you all for supporting me when times are tough and uncertain. 2nd medal is for the Abbott Age Group World Championships.
๐ฌ๐งNext in was Annie - “ I think I spent most of the day crying! It was such an amazing experience, I had set myself a personal goal of enjoying every mile, no pressure & to run a consistent well paced run. The crowd support was just incredible, running over Tower Bridge & down the Mall were the highlights for me. I finished in 04:07.25”
๐ฌ๐ง Next up was Jess - “This race has been a long wait, had my place since 2019 but deferrals due to covid, injury and one virtual race later, the wait was worth it! The experience & atmosphere was everything & more that you hear so much about. Not at my fittest with running but still loved the whole thing and delighted with my time of 04:12.39”
The 2023 London Marathon ballot closes at 2100 TONIGHT!! Do it!! You won’t be disappointed โค๏ธ

๐ด At the weekend the NCTR Juniors headed off for a bike ride around the local villages. And what a fabulous day it was.
๐ด Our Coaches organised 2 rides depending on age. First ride was 8miles and second around 15miles.
๐ด As with previous years, it was a road ride. The routes were fairly hilly, something that can’t be avoided when you live in the Cotswolds but no rider would get left behind.
Each group had a front and back rider who were a parent or coach.
Thank you to everyone who helped out and made this possible for the juniors. ๐ด๐ฅ

๐ Press Report ๐
๐ 12 club members competed in the team triathlon relay at Lake 62 in the Cotswold Water Park. This event was put on club members radar at short notice after the cancellation of the Beyond Events Cotswold triathlon. So, was brilliant to get 3 teams together to compete.
๐The format was: teams of 4 where each member completes a super sprint triathlon (300m swim, 8km bike and 1.5km run in this case) before handing over to their next team mate to do their leg. The combined total time for all 4 team members is used.
๐ The team first in was Ben Twells, Terry Cassidy (team Captain), Tom Williams and Simon Finley. Their time was 2:06:42 which saw them place 18th overall.
๐ Next was Bart Finley (team Captain), Giles Hyland and two of our junior triathletes Sophie Finley, Lucy Hyland in a time of 2:12:20, placing 27th overall.
๐ Not far behind was the team of Jon Francis (team Captain), Helen Holden, Chris Bull and Will Banks. Their time of 2:17:00 put them 38th overall.
๐ The effort from all team members was absolutely superb! This was flat out racing from all and showed how talented the triathletes we have in the club are. I think all would agree that it was great fun too. Lots of whoops, smiles and laughs. We will definitely look to do this again with more teams hopefully.
In addition, it was very special for myself and Giles to be on the same team as our daughters.
๐ A special mention goes to Jon Francis for all your work in putting one of the team together. Thank you.
๐ Also, to Sophie and Lucy. It’s nerve racking taking that step up and competing with adults. They more than held their own and the whole club is proud of you. Not least your junior coaches. We hope that in coming years we will have more juniors join in with something like this as the qualify for the age restriction.
Thank you again to everyone who took part. It was a blast! ๐ฅ๐ฅ

๐Coaches Bart & Neil lead a brick session for the club at the weekend
The session included :-
๐ด 3x 3.5km bike route
๐โ๏ธ Followed by 1km run.
This allowed members to not only do bike and run efforts but also practice their transitions.
With transitions in mind they also practiced how to run with the bike, mounting and dismounting.
๐ดโ๏ธThe coaches also used 3 of the NCTR juniors Jonathon Cook, Will Cartlidge and Thomas Cassidy to help demonstrate the bike skills.
The reason the coaches used the juniors as examples were that they are so proficient in the skills now after practicing so often at the junior sessions.
๐ด๐ปโ๏ธAdults very rarely practice these skills and are often very poor at these as a result.
All 3 of the juniors were fanatic and their help was much appreciated.
A great training day and something we aim to do more off. Massive thanks to Bart & Neil for organising this.

Runners have to summit Moel Siabod, the highest peak in the Moelwynion mountain range. Legend athletes must ascend up beautiful, but grueling rocky paths for 3.5km before reaching the summit at 872m above sea level, this is why it’s known as the toughest multi terrain triathlon in the UK!!!!
๐ Williams crossed the line first for the club in 7:13.24 7th in AG, King came in 7:48.26 for 3rd AG V50.

โญ๏ธ At the weekend Member Lisa Cartlidge completed her second triathlon Ironman distance by taking part in the ‘Outlaw Triathlon Nottingham’
โญ๏ธ This distance comprises of 2.4 miles swim, 112 miles bike, 26.2 miles run, so no easy task!
๐โ๏ธ The swim takes place in the main regatta lake at the National Water Sports Centre 0600. This 2.4m swim is a one lap course of the lake.
๐ด The bike course is made up of running 2 loops of the southern section and 1 loop of the northern section. The partially closed road bike course is flat and fast, with only one notable climb at mile 50 to test the legs and get you out of the saddle. The route takes you through the beautiful Nottinghamshire countryside before returning to the National Water Sports Centre. On the day Lisa was battling a nasty head wind throughout.
๐โ๏ธ All finished off with a mere marathon!! Runners headed out onto the flat, multi-lap run course around the lake and on to the River Trent path. You’ll pass Trent Bridge, the City Ground, Wilford Suspension Bridge and the Victoria Embankment.
As a club we are all so very very proud of Lisa for completing the event in a fantastic time of 14:27.28 6th female 50-55 and a GB AG qualifying time!

๐ข NCTR Junior Week ๐ก
Races!!! Who doesn’t like a bit of friendly competition. We encourage our juniors to enter races, firstly for enjoyment but also so they can see all their hard work paying off.
Examples of the events the juniors have signed up for over the last few years have been….

Many of our juniors have held podium positions in their events and we have a few Glos County Medal holders in the club.
As well as triathlon and running events our members enjoy other recreational activities such as horse riding, show jumping and climbing.
Most importantly we asked our juniors what they think….
๐ I love being with my friends
๐ I’m feeling more fit
๐ I always have so much fun
๐ Getting stronger in my running
๐ Getting faster on my bike and in transitions
๐ Team work
๐ I feel really motivated
๐ I love coming to club, I’ve made lots of friends outside of school.
๐ The coaches are really good fun and encouraging
๐ I get nervous at the start of races but I feel really proud of myself afterwards
๐ I enjoy having something to do and all my friends are interested
We are so proud of every junior. Every week they turn up with their infectious smiles and enthusiasm.
They are all a real asset to the club so thank you for choosing to be in NCTR. Go Juniors ๐๐
.
๐ข NCTR Junior Week ๐ก
The final 4th weekly session is ‘Skills’ also known as BRICK but we add a few extras to help the juniors with transitions.
An typical example of this session is as below……
โ
Bike & Helmet Check
โ
Warm up jog
โ
Warm up ride
โ
Drills - 2 runs - 3 rides - 2 runs
โ
Mount and dismount
โ
Cool down jog
And then we put it all together and get this!!!
Last summer we organised a full FUN triathlon, which saw the juniors completing a full triathlon for their current junior distances…..
We have juniors in age categories TSS to TS3 in the club at the moment, their respective distances are…..
๐ด TSS is age 8: 50m swim (pool) 800m cycle (grass) 600m run.
๐ด TS1 is 9-10 yrs: 150m swim (pool) 2km cycle (grass) 1.2km run
๐ด TS2 is 11-12 yrs: 200m swim (pool), 4km cycle (grass) 1.8km run
๐ด TS3 is 13-14 yrs: 300m swim (pool), 6km cycle (grass) 2.4km run
The session was to give the juniors abit of a taste for a real triathlon again but in a fun, relaxed environment where if things go wrong it didn’t matter, it’s all about learning and getting it right for the real thing. Many of them haven’t had chance to compete in their new age related distances since the pandemic.
We had over 30 juniors turn up for the challenge. It was a really great afternoon with so much learnt, more importantly it was wonderful to see the kids all working together supporting each other and enjoying the session.
As one of our coaches put it ‘ I would just like to praise all NCTR juniors that turned out today. You were all awesome and to see so many smiling faces at the end “PRICELESS” Nobody said it would easy but you all showed great courage and commitment….
Tomorrow we will be giving examples of some events the juniors have competed in!! They really are an awesome bunch ๐
